Our Beginning

The Genesis of BITM

Badlao Institute of Training and Management was established as an institutional response to the need for skilled, committed and socially sensitive human resources for rural transformation.

Preparing People for the Realities of Rural Development

BITM training and institutional learning

Badlao Institute of Training and Management was established in 2009 as an offshoot of Badlao Foundation.

The Institute emerged from the recognition that rural transformation requires skilled, committed and socially sensitive human resources.

Jharkhand has significant rural and tribal populations, and many communities continue to face challenges related to livelihoods, agriculture, education, health and access to development opportunities.

BITM was established to help prepare people capable of working effectively within these environments and responding to grassroots development needs with knowledge, sensitivity and practical skills.

Original Objective

Building Skills for Development and Social Upliftment

The Institute's original objective was to provide training to young people and development workers interested in key areas of rural and social development.

Livelihood Generation

Building skills and knowledge that can strengthen income and livelihood opportunities.

Rural Development

Preparing people to work effectively within grassroots and community development environments.

Health Awareness

Supporting greater awareness of health and wellbeing within development practice.

Education

Strengthening learning and practical capabilities among development workers and communities.

Economic Transformation

Supporting processes that contribute to stronger and more sustainable community development.

Social Upliftment

Strengthening people and institutions working with disadvantaged and marginalised communities.

Institutional Support

A Resource for Organisations Working Toward Similar Goals

BITM also supports other organisations engaged in similar work by making its training infrastructure and institutional resources available to them.

This approach enables development organisations and civil-society partners to use BITM as a space for training, learning, workshops, meetings and institutional capacity building.

How the Purpose Evolved

From Capacity Building to Participatory Development

01

Strengthening Livelihoods

Over the years, BITM has worked to strengthen sustainable livelihoods and contribute to poverty alleviation among communities facing social and economic disadvantage.

02

Community Participation

The Institute promotes community participation, particularly among Dalit, tribal and other marginalised communities, so that people can play an active role in development processes.

03

Institutional Collaboration

BITM combines participatory development with institutional support and collaboration involving civil society, communities and government agencies.

Development rooted in participation, dignity and collective action.

Institutional Roots

A Philosophy Grounded in People-Centred Change

BITM continues to draw inspiration from Gandhian thought and the J.P. movement.

These institutional roots reinforce an approach based on grassroots participation, social responsibility, collaboration and development that strengthens the role of people in shaping their own future.
